Forum: GratefulDead Subject: New 4/17/71 AUD!

A newly surfaced AUD tape for 4/17/71 has been made available by the MOTB folks:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1971-04-17.aud.boswell-smith.motb-0136.107075.flac16
It sounds very good - in fact, probably the best-sounding AUD of 1971 after the Hollywood shows. Although the lineage says it's mono, it's actually a STEREO recording, with the instruments very clear. Hard to believe such an excellent recording would have been uncirculated all this time! (The audience is pretty unobtrusive - much quieter than a New York audience would be...)
As for the show, this is probably the most famous Good Lovin' the Dead ever played. The Lovelight is also a classic (especially when Pigpen hooks up Bob & Barbara). The Hard to Handle is, sadly, cut in the solo.

A couple other AUDs are also new -
AUDs for the Winterland '74 run are very elusive (and not on the Archive) - this one just got put up. It is, unfortunately, a distant & muddy AUD. But you can more or less hear this VERY spacy show, and it may be useful for those with patient ears who want to stream this show. (The SBD is not on the Archive.)

Also new, this AUD of 7/22/72 -

It's not bad for the year - good balance & pretty clear sound, very listenable. The highlight of the show is probably the incredible Playing in the Band. (Truckin' is a bit disappointing in that they steer away from a big jam into a jaunty, jam-free He's Gone.) Unfortunately, it cuts off in Sugar Mag so the last few songs (including Dew) are missing. But it's very nice to have this since the SBD was pulled from the Archive (thanks to a few songs being used in the Download Series).

The MOTB team is apparently working on new AUDs for 3/28/69 and 4/21/69, which is quite a surprise since no AUDs were known for those shows....looking forward to those.

Thanks for the update!

I noticed that 10/16/74 AUD a couple days ago and enjoyed the long and jazzy Playin' in the Band quite a bit... though the re-entry is kinda rough if I remember correctly.
